Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line. This is THECOMMENTARY.CA.
Regular readers and listeners will perhaps know that I don’t read very much fiction. I guess I don’t have the imagination to understand or enjoy it, though I’m fascinated by the craft that many writers and novelists practice. Recently a collection of short stories hit my desk, Darwin’s Bastards: Astounding Tales from Tomorrow. 23 stories are collected herein, stories that take us to future times, parallel universes and provide many a dystopian tale. The stories were selected and edited by my guest now Zsuzsi Gartner, a writer and journalist, who is creative director of Vancouver Review’s Blueprint BC Fiction series, she was a senior editor at Saturday Night, and the author of the acclaimed story collection, All the Anxious Girls on Earth. She has a National Magazine Award for Fiction, among other awards for her magazine journalism. Among the writers featured in this collection include Douglas Coupland, William Gibson, Lee Henderson, Anosh Irani, Annabel Lyon, Stephen Marche (who’s been on the program before), Yann Martel, Adam Lewis Schroder (who’ll be on the program shortly), Timothy Taylor, and many others. The book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. On Friday, April 16th a futuristic costume party launches the book. A number of the authors will be at the Wise Hall at 1882 Adanac here in Vancouver. It’s at 8.00pm. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Zsuzsi Gartner; Good morning, Ms. Gartner.
