Text of the introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.

Elizabeth Bachinsky joins me again. She was last on the program in 2013 when her previous poetry collection, The Hottest Summer in Recorded History was published. She has just published a new collection, Real Grownup. It’s a collection of poems that draw from experiences in Elizabeth’s life, as well as her childhood. In a way, the collection reflects the growing up she’s done. She’s given birth, is raising a child, contends with loss, death, as well as joy. There’s sex too. There’s humour and honesty, acceptance and relief. I’ll ask Liz about some of the feelings she works through in her work, like remembering people who were once in her life. I’ll ask her about writing, and teaching. Elizabeth Bachinsky is the author of six books of poetry including Home of Sudden Service (2006) which was nominated for a Governor General’s Award, and God of Missed Connections (2009), which was nominated for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award, the KOBZAR Book Award, and the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature. She teaches creative writing at Douglas College. This new collection is published by Nightwood Editions. She joined me from her home in New Westminster, when we spoke two and a half weeks ago. Please welcome back to the Planta: On the Line program, Elizabeth Bachinsky; Ms. Bachinsky, good morning.
