Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.
One way to mark Lunar New Year is to go see the immersive exhibition at the Gateway Theatre, Into the Light: Friday, 18 February to Sunday, 20 February 2022. It’s for all ages, and it looks at the rituals and customs practiced today, that are said to have originated in the ancient tale of the sea monster Nian. The installation will be full of red, as well as light, and the sound of celebration. Joining me now is Marina Szijarto. She and Stephanie Wong created Into the Light, and I’ll get Marina to preview what to expect and more. The exhibit is on Friday from 5.00pm to 8.00pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 1.00pm to 8.00pm. Visit www.gatewaytheatre.com for tickets and information. It is a contactless experience with timed entry, and all Provincial Health Orders will be adhered to including showing proof of full vaccination and picture ID, not to mention masks. Marina Szijarto is a Richmond-based professional artist with more than twenty five years experience in diverse contemporary arts practices including installation arts and shrines, theatre and festival design, and community-engaged arts. She is an Artist-in-residence at Mountain View Cemetery here in Vancouver. Visit her website at www.marinaszijarto.com for more. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Marina Szijarto; Ms. Szijarto, good morning.
