The new co-founder and CEO of Overstory Media Group, Farhan Mohamed talks to Joseph Planta about the current media landscape and what OMG intends to do in the near future in British Columbia.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.

Farhan Mohamed joins me again. The former editor-in-chief and co-founder of Daily Hive has a new project debuting today. It is the launch of a new company, Overstory Media Group (OMG). It is an independent media company, that intends to launch 50 community brands, and hire 250 journalists and creators by 2023. The company already has the following community-based brands: Capital Daily in Victoria, Vancouver Tech Journal, Fraser Valley Current, Burnaby Beacon, and Decomplicated. He is leading this new venture with Andrew Wilkinson, co-founder of Tiny, the Canadian technology holding company. I’ll ask Farhan about how this new independent media company sees itself fitting in a changing media landscape. In 2012, Farhan Mohamed co-founded Vancity Buzz, that grew into Daily Hive, which when he left last year in 2020 reached a readership of over six million people monthly. His Twitter handle is @farhanmohamed, and the new website is at www.omgmedia.com. Please welcome back to the Planta: On the Line program, Farhan Mohamed; Mr. Mohamed, good morning.
