Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.
One of the more notable books of the season is the new biography from Sherrill Grace, Tiff: A Life of Timothy Findley. It is the first full biography of the Canadian writer, and an eminent case is made that he is one of the country’s more important writers. His works include the novels The Wars, Famous Last Words, Not Wanted on the Voyage, and The Piano Man’s Daughter, and more, including television and theatre. Sherrill Grace joins me now to talk about the research and writing of this book, as well as the insight she gained on Findley through the people she talked to in his life, as well as his diaries. I’ll ask her about Findley’s legacy and how he’s been viewed by his contemporaries and by readers. Sherrill Grace is a University Killam Professor Emerita at the University of British Columbia. She specialises in Canadian literature and culture; the author of books including Inventing Tom Thomson, Canada and the Idea of the North, Making Theatre: A Life of Sharon Pollock, and Landscapes of War and Memory. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. This new book is published by Wilfred Laurier University Press. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Sherrill Grace; Professor Grace, good morning.
