Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.
A terrific novel that I’m reading now called Kinmount by Rod Carley, who joins. It’s a funny book, that gives the reader an insight into small town Ontario and their social mores, as a down-and-out director from the city arrives to direct an amateur production of Romeo and Juliet. I’ll get Rod to tell us as much as he’d like about the book. It shows us what it’s like backstage, and it’s almost nostalgic what with these past few months thank to COVID. The book also deals with censorship and artistic integrity. I’ll ask Rod about that, as he’s also an award-winning director, playwright, and actor. He’s directed and produced over 100 theatrical productions including over a dozen adaptations of Shakespeare. In 2009, Rod Carley was the winner of the TVO Big Ideas/Best Lecturer competition. He is the artistic director of the Canadore College Acting for Stage and Screen Program, and he’s a professor of English at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, where he joined me from last week.
