The singer and performer Krystle Dos Santos discusses the show she’ll be starring in at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster 15-25 October 2020, Hey Viola! Viola Desmond: The Soundtrack of a Life, with Joseph Planta.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.

For most of us, the newest face on Canada’s ten-dollar bill has been a chance to get to know more about the significance of Viola Desmond. In 1946, she challenged racial segregation in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, when she refused to leave the whites-only section of a cinema. In this era when there’s greater awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement, Desmond’s life story could not be more relevant. A new show, at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster beginning next Thursday, and running through to October 25th is Hey Viola! Viola Desmond: The Soundtrack of a Life. It’s a show created by Krystle Dos Santos and Tracey Power, starring Ms. Dos Santos, and will feature live musicians in cabaret style seating, and music of Desmond’s era. Music from the Great American Song Book, as well as classics by Dr. Billy Taylor and Sam Cooke, songs evoking that era of the 1950s and 1960s with greater awareness for civil rights. I’ll get Ms. Dos Santos to tells us more about this show, her performance and why Viola Desmond’s story is important. Krystle Dos Santos is a blues, jazz and soul singer based out of Vancouver. She grew up in Edmonton and studied at the Canadian College of Performing Arts, and at the University of Alberta. She has performed with the Arts Club Theatre and Firehall Arts Centre.
