Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.

A new book chronicles the half century history of Sierra Club BC. Its author Diane Pinch joins me now. We’ll discuss Passion and Persistence: Fifty Years of the Sierra Club in British Columbia, 1969-2019. It looks at the genesis of the organisation in this province, its roots down the coast, and just what it sought out to accomplish. There has been a lot, including protecting 15% of BC’s land base, and just over 3% of BC’s marine areas. Ms. Pinch chronicles the early activism, as well as the people involved. Some who continue in the organisation, as well as those who’ve gone on to leave, or gone elsewhere such as politics or journalism. The 1993 War in the Woods in Clayoquot Sound is an important time in the province’s history, and the Sierra Club BC played an important part in various environmental issues like that, the opposition to the Site C Dam, and the Trans Mountain Pipeline, among others. Diane Pinch is a retired psychologist and long-time volunteer with Sierra Club BC. I’ll ask her about these past five years as she’s dug through the archives, and interviewed many unforgettable members of Sierra Club BC, many of whom are featured in this book, which is published by Harbour. She joined me from Victoria last month. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Diane Pinch; Ms. Pinch, good morning.
