Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.
The 37th season of the Firehall Arts Centre opens with SpeakEasy Theatre’s production of the provocative comedy The Shipment. Joining me now is Omari Newton, a co-director of this production. The cast features five black actors including Mr. Newton; they are Andrew Creightney, Chris Francisque, Adrian Neblett, and Kiomi Pyke. The show runs 25 September to 05 October 2019 at the Firehall at 280 East Cordova. The play is written by the Korean-American playwright Young Jean Lee. I’ll ask Mr. Newton about the show, the themes that Lee tackles, the context of the show as written when it debuted ten years ago, and the contemporary society we find ourselves today. Visit www.firehallartscentre.ca for tickets and information. And visit www.speakeasytheatre.ca for more. The show is co-directed by Kayvon Khoshkam. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Omari Newton; Ms. Newton, good morning.
