Introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.

Philip Huynh joins me now. His debut short-story collection The Forbidden Purple City has just been published. It features nine stories that have such rich characters that take the reader through East Vancouver to Vietnam; Korea and the United States. Mr. Huynh’s characters cover different aspects of the Vietnamese diaspora. We see familiar relationships between sons and fathers, friends, lovers, and folks who might seem familiar as having been read through folk tales. The book has already gotten great notices, lauding the author for his skill as a writer, and his compelling characters. Philip Huynh was born in Vancouver to parents who had fled Vietnam during the civil war. His work has been published in various literary journals including the Journey Prize Anthology. He is the winner of the Open Season Award from the Malahat Review, and the Asian Canadian Writers’s Workshop Emerging Writers Award. He is a practicing lawyer. The Twitter handle is @pchuynh. The book is published by Goose Lane. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Philip Huynh; Mr. Huynh, good morning.
