Christine Quintana
The award-winning actor, playwright and dramaturg Christine Quintana talks to Joseph Planta about the Gateway Theatre’s production of Dipika Guha’s Yoga Play (07-16 February 2019), her work in the theatre, and more.
Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.
The latest production at the Gateway Theatre is Canadian premiere of Dipika Guha’s Yoga Play. It’s directed by Jovanni Sy, who when he was on this program this past fall, said it would be his last production as artistic director of the Gateway Theatre. The play runs 07-16 February 2019, and joining me now is one of the performers in the production Christine Quintana. I’ll get her to tell us about this show that looks at the yoga industry hilariously and satirically. The themes of authenticity and self enlightenment are explored in the show. I’ll ask Ms. Quintana about these themes, the Guha work, as well as her fellow cast members (Lois Anderson, Hrundi V. Bakshi, Derek Chan, Shawn Macdonald, and Chirag Naik). Christine Quintana is an award-winning actor, playwright, and dramaturg, who is coming off of the smash production of the East Van Panto. She is associated with Neworld Theatre, Tarragon Theatre (where she’s playwright-in-residence), as well as the major theatre companies in this town and across the country. In 2017, she was the recipient of the Siminovitch Protege Prize for Playwriting from Marcus Youssef, who was also on the show this past fall, when he was on to talk about the East Van Panto production that he wrote, and that Ms. Quintana was starring in. Visit www.christinequintana.ca for more. Her Twitter handle is @christinequinty. The website for the Gateway is at www.gatewaytheatre.com. That’s where you can get tickets and more information. I reached Christine in Richmond, British Columbia, one Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago, while in the midst of rehearsals for Yoga Play. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Christine Quintana; Ms. Quintana, good morning.
