Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Ten years ago Vancouver doctor Gabor Maté published In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction. It wasn’t his first book, but it quickly became a bestseller and an important book around the world in how it wrote about addiction, providing remarkable first-person accounts and riveting case studies. Most of all the book was lauded in how it provided a new way to look at addiction, compassionately. The book has been reissued with a new tenth anniversary edition that features a new introduction reflecting on the opioid crisis. Dr. Maté joined me recently to talk about his work, this seminal book, these past ten years, and more. There is also an audio book available read by Dr. Maté’s son, Daniel Maté, who’s been on the program before. Visit www.drgabormate.com for more, as well as details on upcoming events. The book is published by Vintage Canada. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Gabor Maté; Dr. Maté, good morning.
