Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting has been a notable literary achievement since its release in 1993. It was his first book in a career that’s included eleven novels and four short story collections. The latest book is Dead Men’s Trousers. It brings back the characters so many have taken to after the Trainspotting film adaptation of 1996, and a number of sequels. We see Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie once more. They’re in middle age now confronting a number of realities. Mr. Welsh joins me now. We talk about these characters, the reception his work gets then as now. We also discuss his career, living in the United States, visiting Canada, living elsewhere, and writing. This new book is published by Jonathan Cape. I spoke to Irvine Welsh in Toronto last week while there for an appearance with the Toronto International Film Festival.
