Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Kevin Chong joins me again. The author has recently published a new novel The Plague. It is a modern retelling of Camus’s classic novel set in a not-too-distant Vancouver where an infectious disease forces quarantine. The book looks at various themes, chiefly how Vancouver copes in a crisis what with its class inequality. I’ll get Mr. Chong to tell us about his characters, this city as he sees it, and the various themes of survival, human suffering, and resilience. I’ve started the book and am enjoying it a great deal. Kevin Chong is the author of six books including Northern Dancer, My Year of the Racehorse, Beauty Plus Pity, Neil Young Nation, and Baroque-a-Nova. He teaches at UBC’s Creative Writing Department, and SFU’s Writers Studio. His website is at www.kevinchong.ca. This new book is published by Arsenal Pulp Press. Please welcome back to the Planta: On the Line program, Kevin Chong; Mr. Chong, good morning.
