Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Julian Porter joins me now. He and recent guest to this show Stephen Grant have recently published the terribly engaging 149 Paintings You Really Need to See in North America (So You Can Ignore the Others). It’s more than a guide book as to the must-sees in public art galleries throughout the United States and Canada, it’s also a loving look at art through the lens of enthusiasts who encourage the same eagerness and appreciation of their reader. You get a sense of art and its value to the eye and spirit, as well as an overview of the works of the finest artists in history that can be found whether you’re in Philadelphia or Vancouver, Boston or Toronto, or New York City, where there are just lots of great and important works to see. The book usually has a photo of each of the 149 paintings, followed by a piece written by either Mr. Porter or Mr. Grant. Julian Porter is a distinguished barrister who has had a lengthy career in civil and criminal law. He has written numerous books including a number of 149 Paintings books for Europe. He is a board member of the Cancer Research Foundation, and the Stratford Festival, and is a former chair of the Toronto Transit Commission, and former president of the CNE. His website is at www.julianporterqc.com. This book is published by Dundurn. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Julian Porter; Mr. Porter, good morning.
