Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
If you’re like me and was a fan of Mad Men, you’ll enjoy the new book from the writer Robin Brunet. Let’s Get Frank: Canada’s Mad Man of Advertising is a biography of a legend in the Canadian advertising world, Frank Palmer. He was behind the well-known and acclaimed agency Palmer Jarvis, gaining renown across the country and around the world. He sold Palmer Jarvis to DDB, which became DDB Canada. He remains its Chairman and CEO today. Mr. Brunet chronicles the growing up and rise of Palmer here in Vancouver to the heights of advertising. As a former employee and now rival, Chris Staples says, Palmer is “the only Western Canadian ad man who went to Toronto and wound up owning the town.” Palmer is also a colourful prankster, equally known for his practical jokes as his philanthropic work, not to mention his business acumen which has done millions in billings for decades. I’ll get Robin to tell us about Frank Palmer and more. Robin Brunet is a writer, editor and journalist. He’s written for over one hundred magazines including BCBusiness, the Hollywood Reporter and Award Magazine. His previous book was the biography of Red Robinson: The Last Deejay. This new book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, from Langley, BC, Robin Brunet; Mr. Brunet, good morning.
