Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
Bernard Cuffling joins me now. He has long been a fixture on the Vancouver theatre scene since he arrived from England in the early 1970s. He is starring in a one-man show, a production of Coming Up From Air, adapted from the George Orwell novel. Set in England, pre-World War II, the show features Mr. Cuffling as George Bowling, a salesman who escapes London for a few days. He visits his childhood home, and tries to reconcile his Edwardian era upbringing to the reality of impending war. The themes of change, nostalgia, the threats of commercialism and capitalism are explored, and I’ll get Bernard to perhaps reflect on how timely this show might just be here for this part of the world today. Bernard Cuffling has appeared in all the major theatres in Western Canada, as well as in Ontario, in particular the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. He has worked in film, television and radio, and has won all the major awards in this town, including the Sam Payne Award, a Jessie Award for lifetime achievement, and induction into the BC Walk of Fame. He holds the distinction of participating in more Arts Club Theatre productions than any other actor. And later this year, he’ll be seen in their production of Beauty and the Beast. This production of Coming Up For Air is at the Kay Meek Studio Theatre in West Vancouver, 1700 Mathers Avenue, from 16-25 November 2017. Visit www.kaymeek.com for tickets and information. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Bernard Cuffling; Mr. Cuffling, good morning.
