The award-winning Georgia Straight journalist Travis Lupick talks to Joseph Planta about covering the opioid crisis in Vancouver and more.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

We continue meeting some of the local journalists in town that are noted for their award-winning work as I’m joined now by Travis Lupick. The Georgia Straight staff writer has won many awards for his reporting including a Jack Webster Award, and a Canadian Association of Journalism award. I follow Travis’s work. His reporting on the drug crisis in Vancouver is top notch and insightful. I’ll ask him about that which he reports about in and around Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. We’re hearing all the time of the number of deaths due to the opioid crisis, and Mr. Lupick does more than just report statistics. I’ll get him to tell us about his beat, the stories that interest him, and how he confronts the work he does, especially since it can almost always affect one mentally and physically, being at the frontline of an emergency. Perhaps we’ll get into the solutions political or otherwise. There’ll be a new government in Victoria shortly, and a by-election for Vancouver City Council soon, so what will that yield? Travis works for the Georgia Straight, which celebrated its fiftieth anniversary this past spring. We’ll reflect on where he works, and how he views its place in the media in this town.
