Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
One of the more engaging and encouraging books is the new collection Turning Parliament Inside Out: Practical Ideas for Reforming Canada’s Democracy. It’s a collection of essays from current Members of Parliament, from all parties, with urgent, necessary, and practical ideas as to reforming how politics is done. Joining me now is one of this book’s editors Kennedy Stewart. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2011, and is the NDP MP for Burnaby South. He is his party’s critic for science, and chair of the NDP’s British Columbia caucus. He edited the book with the Conservative MP Michael Chong, and the Liberal MP Scott Simms. I’ll get Kennedy Stewart to tell us about how this book came together, some of the ideas therein, as well as just how likely some of what they propose might get through. The book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Proceeds of the book will go to Samara Canada, a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy group dedicated to reconnecting citizens to politics. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Kennedy Stewart; Dr. Stewart, good morning.
