Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Canadians are proud of their healthcare system, but we also lament it, its inefficiencies, the long waits for certain services, and of course the bureaucracy. A new book looks at the flaws of the Canadian healthcare system and offers up some solutions. The book is called How Hockey Can Save Healthcare: A Principle-Based Approach to Reforming the Canadian Healthcare System, and its author is Dr. Stephen Pinney, who joins me now. I’ll get Dr. Pinney to tell us about the solutions he has to make our system better. He uses hockey to explain how the system can be refined to provide high quality, government-funded healthcare. Stephen Pinney is an orthopaedic surgeon based out of San Francisco, who from 2010 to 2012 served as head of the Department of Orthopaedics at St. Paul’s Hospital here in Vancouver. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Canada and is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has degrees from Harvard, McGill and the University of British Columbia. This new book is published by Lulu. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, in San Francisco, California, Stephen Pinney; Dr. Pinney, good morning.
