Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
The Art of Jeffrey Rubinoff is a new book, the first to be written about the sculptor, considered one of the great sculptors in steel in the second half of the twentieth century. In the 1970s and 1980s, Mr. Rubinoff had emerged as one of the major artists in North America. He had exhibited in the United States and Canada, and was highly regarded. By 1998 though, he left it all behind. He found as many of the pieces he’d sold, and brought them back to a 200 acre property on British Columbia’s Hornby Island. He’s since sequestered himself from the art world, not selling anything, but still produces large steel sculptures that he displays on his property. The Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park has now been open to the public since 2004. James Fox, an art historian and academic, had been attending a conference hosted at the sculpture park, and upon discovering the art and artist, spent the next three years assembling internationally recognised scholars from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom to produce this new book, the first major account of Rubinoff’s life and art. The book features pieces from distinguished contributors (Mark E. Breeze, Peter Clarke, David Lawless, Alexander Massouras, Joan Pachner, Barry Phipps, James Purdon, Alistair Rider, Aaron Rosen, Tom Stammers, and Jay Winter), including Maria Tippett, who was on this program last year. The art historian and broadcaster James Fox is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He is the author of British Art and the First World War, 1914-1924, and a forthcoming book, The Meaning of Colour. @doctorjamesfox is the Twitter handle. The Art of Jeffrey Rubinoff is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program in London, England today, James Fox; Dr. Fox, good morning.
