Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

In September 2014, the Harper Government finalised the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement. A new book sounds the alarm about the agreement and how it favours China and not Canada, and how it puts our democratic institutions at risk. The book’s author Gus Van Harten joins me now. In the book he discusses how the agreement was rushed, and how its long-term effects haven’t been full comprehended. The book is called Sold Down the Yangtze: Canada’s Lopsided Investment Deal with China. I’ll get him to tell us about how this agreement is flawed, and how it’s the trend globally. And I’ll get him to reflect on what might happen, and what the citizen might consider this fall, what with the federal election. Gus Van Harten is a professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. He’s taught previously at the London School of Economics. He’s a frequent commentator in the media. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, from Burlington, Ontario, Gus Van Harten; Professor Van Harten, good morning.
