Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
In September 2013, thirty men and women aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Surprise, protesting drilling in the Arctic, were detained by Russian commandos. The Arctic 30, as they’re soon styled are imprisoned. There’s a worldwide campaign calling on their release. A new book: Don’t Trust Don’t Fear Don’t Beg: The Extraordinary Story of the Arctic 30 has just been published, and its author Ben Stewart joins me now. Mr. Stewart was a leading figure in the campaign to free the Arctic 30. He had also led the first Greenpeace expedition to challenge Arctic oil drilling off the coast of Greenland in 2010. He is the head of media at Greenpeace, and a former Guardian Student Journalist of the Year. He lives in London, but joins me from here in Vancouver, where a few days ago he was in town for events promoting this new book, which is published by The New Press. I’ll get Mr. Stewart to tell us about his book, and provide us with insight as to the 100 days that these activists spent in a Russian jail. As well, we’ll discuss why the Arctic is a top priority for environmentalists. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Ben Stewart; Mr. Stewart, good morning.
