Roy Henry Vickers and Lucky Budd join me again. The bestselling duo have a new book out, from Harbour Publishing: Orca Chief. It’s the third in a series of Northwest Coast legends that Roy and Lucky have collaborated on. Their previous books: Raven Brings the Light, and Cloudwalker were bestsellers, as is this one. I checked and last week it was number one in the province. They’ve gained quite the following here in British Columbia, and beyond. This new book tells the legend of how four hunters from the village of Kitkatla, thousands of years ago, left home looking for food. They cast their anchor overboard, carelessly. The Orca Chief sends for them and teaches them how to sustainably harvest the ocean’s resources. It’s a story that’s thousands of years old, but a necessary one. I’ll get the Messers. Vickers and Budd to tell us about this story and putting it all together. Their collaboration has yielded these three books, as well as last year’s Storyteller, a retrospective of Roy’s work from 2003 to 2013. That too was a bestseller. Robert Lucky Budd is an indomitable historian. You can hear him regularly on CBC’s North By Northwest where he presents the Voices of British Columbia series, based on the Imbert Orchard recordings that inspired two acclaimed books, 2010’s Voices of British Columbia, and last fall’s Echoes of British Columbia: Voices from the Frontier.
