The Sound of Dragon Music Festival (09-11 May 2014) is previewed with the accomplished musician Lan Tung, who joins Joseph Planta to talk about the first Chinese music festival in Vancouver, what Chinese music is, and more.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Vancouver’s first Chinese Music Festival is on 09-11 May 2014, and joining me now to talk about it is Lan Tung. She’s the artistic director, and an accomplished erhu player, vocalist, composer and producer. An erhu by the way, is a Chinese violin. I’ll get her to talk about that and more, what to expect the second weekend of May at the Roundhouse Community Centre, as well as what Chinese music encompasses. Generally we think of it as the music as heard at Chinese operas. I guess you’d think that reading Wayson Choy or looking at the history of Vancouver’s Chinatown in the first half of the 20th Century when there were a number of opera houses. When some of us think of Chinese music, it’s perhaps the pop music that we encounter in restaurants or malls. But it’s a lot more than that. There’s a great tradition developing of fusion music, collaboration with other culture groups, as well as improvisation. Visit www.soundofdragon.com for tickets and information on the events. And www.lantungmusic.com for information on my guest now. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Lan Tung; Ms. Tung, good morning.
