Michael Byers

I am Planta: On the Line program here at THECOMMENTARY.CA.

One of the themes that’s come up with guests this season is Canada, how we perceive ourselves and how we’re perceived around the world. I’m thinking of my conversations with Roy MacGregor and Andrew Cohen. While MacGregor looks to the past at the myths we’ve created, and Cohen how we nation build in the present, today I talk to Dr. Michael Byers who looks beyond our borders and how Canada asserts its independence and how it conducts its foreign policy. He looks to the future in his new book, Intent for a Nation: What is Canada for? Published by Douglas and McIntyre, the book retails for $32.95.

Michael Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. He is also the Academic Director of the Liu Institute for Global Issues. He was a Professor of Law and Canadian Studies at Duke, and was a fellow at Oxford. His previous books include Custom, Power and the Power of Rules, and War Law. I am pleased to welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Michael Byers; Good morning, Professor Byers.
