Mark MacKinnon is the Middle East correspondent for the Globe and Mail. He’s written a new book, The New Cold War: Revolutions, Rigged Elections and Pipeline Politics in the Former Soviet Union. Distilling the politics and people of Eastern Europe is not an easy task and MacKinnon does it with ease, as he chronicles the democratic revolutions in Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine, and Krygyzstan, and the role both the United States and Russia have played throughout. Did the countries of the former Soviet Union get anything new with the fall of the Berlin Wall, or was it a bit of the same after the fall of Communism?
Mark MacKinnon is a two-time winner of the National Newspaper Award, and the former Moscow bureau chief for the Globe and Mail, where he’s worked for nearly a decade. The New Cold War is published by Random House and retails for $34.95. Mark Mackinnon joined me from Ottawa.
