The actor, director, and artistic director of Toronto’s Why Not Theatre, Ravi Jain discusses the show featuring himself and his mother, A Brimful of Asha, playing until 08 February 2014 at the Revue Stage as part of the PuSh Festival, with Joseph Planta.

There’s a show that opens this week at the Arts Club Theatre Company’s Revue Stage on Granville Island. It’s called A Brimful of Asha, and it’s an examination of the relationship between a son and a mother, surrounding the issue of marriage. The culture is Indian, Canada is the backdrop to which this story takes place, and it’s a clash of cultures, and generations as the mother and son appear on stage to talk about how the mother wishes to see her son married, and in the sort of traditional way that she’s accustomed to: an Indian arranged marriage. The great novelty of this show is that it is written by a mother and son, and they appear on stage playing themselves in this two-person production. Ravi Jain joins me now. He directs his mother, Asha, who co-stars and who co-wrote this production. I’ll ask Mr. Jain about how this show came about, the terrific response it’s gotten across the country, and what we ought to expect when we go see the show.
