George Orr

The veteran journalist and educator George Orr discusses media and journalism in Vancouver and beyond, with Joseph Planta.

Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

We continue the ongoing effort on this program, to understand journalism and media, especially the variety available in this part of the world. George Orr joins me now. A lot of the folks you see and hear in the local media business, were taught by Mr. Orr at BCIT, where he was an instructor for over 20 years up to the year 2010. He graduated from the same BCIT, then he worked as a reporter at radio station CKNW, and at television stations CKVU, the CBC, and BCTV from the late 1970s to the 1980s. He’s been producing documentaries as of late. You can go on You Tube and see one of his films: Chasing the Dream: The Untold Story of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games [1]. He’s an award winning journalist, winning a Jack Webster Award in 2001, and he received a fellowship from the Webster Foundation the following year. I remember him from his mid-1990s as the host of a short-lived current affairs program, Studio BC, which aired on the Knowledge Network. We’ll talk about the media landscape in Vancouver and beyond, and more. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, in studio as it were, George Orr; Mr. Orr, good morning.
