Charlie Smith
The editor of the Georgia Straight, Charlie Smith joins Joseph Planta in studio for an extended conversation on politics, the general media landscape in BC and beyond, and more.
Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
Charlie Smith joins me again. He’s the editor of the Georgia Straight, the paper that’s had a long history in this town beginning as a subversive paper in the 1960s, then becoming an alternative paper, to how it’s generally thought of now, as an award-winning news and entertainment weekly. Mr. Smith joins me now to talk about current affairs, as we have in the three previous times he’s been on. Now that he’s in person today, we’ll take a reflective look at the changing media landscape in the city, and more. He began as a reporter at the Straight 20 years ago, becoming editor in 2005. He was recognised last year for his work by explorASIAN, especially for championing coverage of Vancouver’s Asian communities in the Straight’s pages and beyond. The Straight’s website is a wonderful source of breaking news throughout the week, follow them on Twitter @georgiastraight. Charlie’s own handle is @csmithstraight. Their arts and food coverage is terrific. There are some great writers at the paper. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, in studio today, Charlie Smith; Mr. Smith, good morning.
