Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

The indomitable, beloved, and unmistakable Mike McCardell has a new book out. Like the others, it’s a good one, though it’s a different size than his previous ones. It’s a good one nonetheless. It’s called Haunting Vancouver: A Nearly True History, and in it he takes us back in time. Well, a guy named Jock Linn, an accidentally immortal reporter, takes us back. He has firsthand experience with folks like Pauline Johnson, the ‘Hanging Judge’ Matthew Baillie Begbie, Joe Fortes, A.E.B. Davie, and ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton, among many, many other figures in the past. Linn was a Sapper, and I’ll get Mike, who joins me now, to tell us what they are. As well, I’ll get him to tell us about this very fine book. It’s a great history of Vancouver, and an entertaining and thoughtful way to bring us these great stories about colourful figures, timeless places, and legendary moments in the history of Vancouver. This new book is from Harbour Publishing. It is his ninth book. You can see Mike with the Last Word [2] on the CTV News at Six broadcast here in Vancouver; on channel 9. He shares that spot with Dave Gerry. Please welcome back to the Planta: On the Line program, this time in person, Mike McCardell; Mr. McCardell, good morning.
