A really important book that everyone should read is Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol. It’s author Ann Dowsett Johnston joins me now to talk about this book that looks at how dangerous and ubiquitous alcohol consumption is on women. And not just in recent years, rather it’s been a growing trend, and perhaps because women have always tended to drink alone, something we haven’t paid close enough attention to. Whose fault might it be? Is it the marketing that goes around booze and bad behaviour, fun and sex? Could it go back to feminism? And fundamentally, when it comes to the amount of alcohol women versus men can consume, well, it’s clear the genders aren’t equal in that regard. Ann Dowsett Johnston does a wonderful job bringing the reader facts, statistics, and research. She has some great profiles of women, their struggles and experiences. And particularly moving and fascinating is her own story, which she shares in this book. She has seen alcohol consume her life, and I’ll ask her how bad it got, and more. Ann Dowsett Johnston is an award winning journalist who’s won five National Magazine Awards, a Southam Fellowship, and most recently an Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy, from which a series of articles in the Toronto Star appeared, and thus this book. She was the editor of the Maclean’s university rankings issue, where she‘d had a long association with. And for a time was vice-principal at McGill University.
