There’s a marvelous book out now, a collection of articles drawn from the archives over at BC Studies. It’s called Home Truths: Highlights from BC History. Therein you’ll read 11 essays written by distinguished authors, historians, and academics, all with a deep appreciation for the history of the province of British Columbia. BC Studies has been around for more than forty years. It’s BC’s leading scholarly journal, but as stated by its founding editors Margaret Prang and Walter Young ten years after its inception in 1968, though its articles were to meet the criteria of scholarly reporting, they ‘should appeal to a wider readership than is assumed in the case of a purely academic journal.’ This book is a great sketch of the province, its people and its history. It looks at various themes and aspects of BC identity, for example there are some unpleasant realities uncovered, as well as fascinating stories. That which is written about in this book includes and is not limited to: colonialism, race relations, human geography, the understanding of the concept of ‘home,’ fly fishing, and living in a logging camp. We’ll reflect now on this collection, BC and more with Richard Mackie. He is the associate editor of BC Studies, and with Graeme Wynn, who is BC Studies editor and a professor of historical geography at UBC, edited this book. Mr. Mackie’s previous books include Trading Beyond the Mountains, Island Timber, Vancouver Island, and Mountain Timber. He joins me from here in Vancouver.
