The filmmaker Cornelia Principe discusses the film she’s co-produced, the award-winning documentary, The World Before Her, which begins a special engagement today in Vancouver, with Joseph Planta.

A powerful, provocative, prescient documentary has a special engagement beginning today at the Fifth Avenue Cinema here. The World Before Her is the critically acclaimed documentary from Nisha Pahuja; she wrote and directed this film that takes us to two very different sides of an emerging India. It’s a modern India that’s developing, and never better expressed in the two sort of stories that are told. We have the gaudy and glamorous world of the Miss India pageant, and the harsh and zealous world embodied in a Hindu fundamentalist and nationalist camp for young girls, that’s of a right-wing group also known as the Hindu Taliban. The film tells the human story of girls in both sides of this battle for the idea of modern India, and contrasts their stories and circumstances. I am joined now by one of the film’s co-producers, Cornelia Principe. I’ll ask her about what it was like to produce this film, what she hopes comes about because of it, and why we should see it. Claudia Principe’s last documentary Grinders premiered at Hot Docs 2011, and her previous films include The Rise and Fall of the Grumpy Burger, and the Gemini award winning Diamond Road.
