Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line. This is THECOMMENTARY.CA.

There is a new fascinating, thoughtful, and important book out now. It’s called Lonely: Learning to Live with Solitude. 1 in 4 Canadians live with the affliction to loneliness. One can have a demanding job, good friends and a family, but you can still feel incredibly lonely. That’s what happened with the author, Emily White, who joins me now. She was a successful lawyer, and yet had to deal with chronic loneliness. With this book we see how insidious this is, what happened to Emily, and the work she’s done to deal with loneliness, and the prodigious research she’s done. This is a necessary and enlightening book. Published by McClelland and Stewart, there’s also a website: www.lonelythebook.com [2]. From St. John’s Newfoundland this day, please welcome to the Planta: On the Line, Emily White; Good morning, Ms. White.
