I am Planta: On the Line. This is THECOMMENTARY.CA. There’s a magnificent coffee table-type book out now called 100 Photos That Changed Canada. It is a fantastic book that tells Canada’s stories through the photographs that have touched us throughout our history; images that have also unsettled us at times. With marvellous essays from 30 notable writers, who contribute commentary to the memorable photos, we get some context on the images, the people depicted therein, as well as some necessary insight on who captured that moment of history. I’ve seen the book prominently displayed at shops and the sort, and it’s a great holiday season gift, and not just for Christmas, because it really should be displayed in our homes. Sure there are photos that aren’t here, that perhaps should, but it’s a view onto the country that’s welcome. The book is edited by Mark Reid, the editor of The Beaver magazine, who joins me now. Its foreword is written by Charlotte Gray, and its preface is by Deborah Morrison, president of Canada’s National History Society. Mr. Reid and Ms. Morrison will be joined by the CBC’s Don Newman this Thursday, 03 December 2009, at the Chapters downtown, here in Vancouver at 7.30pm to discuss the book and more. 100 Photos That Changed Canada is published by HarperCollins.
