The book has been described as lucid, staggeringly researched, and important. It is Champlain’s Dream: The Visionary Adventurer Who Made a New World in Canada. The author is the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning historian of Washington’s Crossing, David Hackett Fischer. That Samuel de Champlain is a remarkable figure in our history is without question, and that he’s been overlooked recently even outright ignored is also true, which was reason enough for the author to write this book now; and in time for the 400th anniversary of many of Champlain’s achievements. David Hackett Fischer is University Professor and Warren Professor of History at Brandeis University. He’s written numerous books including, Paul Revere’s Ride and Albion’s Seed, among others.
