Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line. This is THECOMMENTARY.CA.

Joining me now is the historian Stephen Bown. He’s just written a fascinating new book on Captain George Vancouver, revisiting the life of the man who charted four thousand miles of coastline from California to Alaska, and who, as one reviewer has said, put the British in British Columbia. Stephen Bown is the author of the acclaimed Scurvy and A Most Damnable Invention. He contributes to The Beaver and lives in Canmore, Alberta. He joins me this morning from here in Vancouver. The book is called Madness, Betrayal, and the Lash: The Epic Voyage of Captain George Vancouver. It is published by Douglas and McIntyre and retails for $34.95. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Stephen Bown; Good morning, Mr. Bown.
