You've already probably heard much about Alan Bradley already. He's become a bit of a publishing phenomenon, with the publication of his new novel The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. It has won awards already, and has had its rights snapped up all over the world. The book has been described as refreshing and wonderful, inventive, fast-paced, quick witted and imbued with a sense of humour that transcends the macabre seriousness of its subject. Alan Bradley just turned 70, something a lot of the press clippings have been making much about. He spent a career in television engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, and he taught courses there as well. He has written previous books in the past, but this book has fascinated many, and people are interested in his lead character, Flavia, a precocious 11-year old who has two older sisters who are less than pleasant, and a father who's obsessed with stamps. The story takes place in England in 1950, in an ancient country house, you have a murder and more. The book is published by Doubleday and retails for $25.00.
