Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line. This is THECOMMENTARY.CA.
David Bergen joins me now. His previous novels include The Year of Lesser, a New York Times Notable Book; See the Child, a finalist for the Governor General Award for Fiction; and The Time In Between, a winner of the Giller Prize. His newest book is The Retreat. It begins in 1973, when an 18-year old Ojibway boy, Raymond is taken by a police officer to a remote island to be left for dead. A year later Raymond meets a family who come to a commune, some new age deal, and he falls in love with one of the family's young daughters. The book is a fascinating view of the relationship between Natives and Indians, and much more. The Retreat is published by McClelland & Stewart and retails for $32.99. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, David Bergen; Good morning, Mr. Bergen.
