Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.
The power of storytelling is examined in a new book by Derek Gladwin, Rewriting Our Stories: Education, Empowerment, and Well-Being. It’s talks about how powerless people feel nowadays, and how the root of a lot of people’s fears stem from the stories we tell ourselves, whether they’re rooted in family lore, sociocultural beliefs, or outright misinformation. I ask Dr. Gladwin, who joins me now, about his field of research, this book, and the thinking he hopes to change with his work. One myth shattered in the book is that propagated through the work of Horatio Alger. As well, embracing different forms of narrative, might just make us better people with more empathy, which as we’re aware, we’re in short supply of nowadays. Derek Gladwin is an Assistant Professor in Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia. He has authored books on narrative, media, and eco-literacy. Visit www.derekgladwin.com for more information. This new book is published by Atrium, which is an imprint of Cork University Press. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Derek Gladwin; Professor Gladwin, good morning.
