Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, British Columbia, at TheCommentary.ca.
Amy Fung joins me now. She has just published a new book, Before I Was a Critic I Was a Human Being. It’s a remarkable book that begins with Ms. Fung moving throughout the country, whether it’s from Hong Kong as a child to live in Edmonton, or working in Alberta and travelling the Prairies, what it’s like in Vancouver, or on the East Coast of Canada. Her encounters illuminate a part of how Canada has been shaped by the colonial experience, and how our own identities and sense of belonging can be shaped as well. She also examines culture, and art, as well as the structures in culture and art that somehow perpetuate power structures in the discourse that are troubling and need dismantling. I quite enjoyed the discussion that Ms. Fung starts with this book. A reader of it can’t help but see their place in the country and the wider world in how she views her own place and how she’s reacted to by others. Amy Fung is a writer, researcher and curator who has been published in various publications. This is her first book and it’s published by Book*hug Press. www.amyfung.com is the website for more, and the Twitter handle is @anotheramyfung. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Amy Fung; Ms. Fung, good morning.
