Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

The book is called Dead in Tangier. It’s a novel set in the 1930s. Its protagonist Captain Equi has been forced in exile from Italy after running afoul of the Mussolini regime. In Tangier as a homicide detective, he encounters the unique culture, where secrecy and silence are the norms. I’ll get the book’s author John Harlan Hughes, who joins me now, to tell us as much as he’d like about his novel, the characters therein, and this rich setting, not only the place of Tangier but what it was like 1936, with the Spanish Civil War next door, and the looming world war that was to come. John Harlan Hughes has a doctorate in history, he has written non-fiction, including the book House of Tears: Westerners’ Adventures in the Islamic World. He is also an educator. The website for more is at www.johnharlanhughes.com. This new book is the first in a series. It is published by Stonesong Press. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, John Harlan Hughes; Mr. Hughes, good morning.
