The filmmaker and a producer on the forthcoming Gemini, a finalist at the Crazy 8’s Film Festival, Phil Planta discusses the filmmaking challenge of producing a short film in eight days, his work in film thus far, and more, with Joseph Planta.

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

The Crazy 8’s film competition is one of the fascinating events in this town. It’s a filmmaking challenge where teams of filmmakers create short films in eight days. Over 100 teams apply. 40 semi-finalists are chosen to pitch in person to a jury of industry professionals. 12 finalists then workshop their scripts with a professional story editor. Now, six winners have been selected. They’ll received $1,000 and a production package provided by sponsors in the local film production community that will help complete these shorts in the eight days. The films shoot shortly, and joining me now is one of the finalists, Phil Planta. With Mayumi Yoshida, he is a producer of Gemini. Mily Mumford is the film’s writer and director. It’s described like this: “In a very near future two VR gamers coincidentally meet in real life and through their interactions expose the dark side of virtual reality and gaming.” I’ll get Mr. Planta to tell us about this project, what he might expect from the Crazy’s process, and his work in film. Phil Planta is a producer, filmmaker and VFX artist. He is a graduate of the Vancouver Film School, and Focal Point School of Photography. He has worked as a VFX artist for Once Upon a Time, Falling Skies, and Revolution. He was VFX DoP on Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2, and Big Eyes. He was also data wrangler on the set of Red 2. He produced the short films Contaminant (2013), and Final Wishes (2016), both winning first place at the Vancouver Asian Film Festival MAMM. He also produced Akashi, which won First Place with Telus Shorthive, and won at the NBC Universal Short Film Festival. And if you might have guessed, because of the shared surname, we are related.
