Kate Bird joins me again. She’s recently published another great book, City on Edge: A Rebellious Century of Vancouver Protests, Riots, and Strikes. It features evocative photographs from the Vancouver Sun and Province archives, photos that reflect the long and rich history of protest and activism in Vancouver. The photos reflect a city that has seen riots, racial and religious; peace protests as well as ones political. The photos are energetic and provide much context as to why Vancouver is what it is. I’ll ask Ms. Bird about why Vancouver has been a hotbed of protest. Is it because it’s rather beautiful? Is it because of geography? Kate Bird helped manage the Vancouver Sun and Province’s photograph collection. She’s researched numerous books including Making Headlines: 100 Years of the Vancouver Sun. She was last on when her book, Vancouver in the Seventies was published. That book was a bestseller. The foreword for this book is written by Charlie Demers.
