Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

Mark Zuehlke joins me again. The distinguished historian has just published the twelfth installment of the bestselling and invaluable Canadian Battle Series. The new book is called The Cinderella Campaign: First Canadian Army and the Battles for the Channel Ports. It’s an overlooked campaign that Mr. Zuehlke presents in his inimitable way. Mark’s readers have long admired his diligence and the remembrance he does of these battles and these soldiers. The First Canadian Army had been relegated during the Normandy invasion, and were tasked with opening the Channel ports from Le Havre to Ostend in Belgium. This happened suddenly in September 1944 when it became a priority, and would allow Monty (Field Marshal Montgomery) to drive to the Rhine and win the war before Christmas. The Germans were brutal, and this book looks at the fighting, and at just how important this campaign was. Mark Zuehlke is Canada’s leading writer of popular military history. He’s written nearly thirty books, works of fiction, as well as books on the War of 1812, and the First World War. The Canadian Battle Series, it bears repeating continues with this twelfth volume, is the most detailed account of any army during World War II ever written by a single author. In 2014, he received the prestigious Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media, named for Pierre Berton. This new book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. There will be an event to launch this book in Vancouver, Friday, 01 December 2017 at the Seaforth Armoury 1650 Burrard Street. That begins at 7pm. Visit www.zuehlke.ca for more information. Please welcome back to the Planta: On the Line program, in Victoria, Mark Zuehlke; Mr. Zuehlke, good morning.
