Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

The Georgia Straight celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year. Its history as a subversive challenge to authority in the counterculture era of the 1960s and early 1970s through to today as a news and culture source in a city that has changed a great deal itself in fifty years is captured in a new book: The Georgia Straight: A 50th Anniversary Celebration. Doug Sarti has collected over 100 iconic covers over fifty years, and provided their context in this new book that’s a colourful addition to any historians bookshelf or coffee table. You see through this book and these remarkable covers the history of this town as they capture the political and cultural zeitgeist, as well as chronicle fashion, taste and moods. Mr. Sarti wrote the book with the Straight’s founder Dan McLeod, and there are essays from Mike Harcourt, Paul Watson and Bif Naked, all figures whose careers in their respective fields have flourished with the history of the Georgia Straight. Doug Sarti is a feature and news writer, who has been with the Straight since 2003, and serves as its editorial administrator. He joins me today to talk about this book and the enviable task he had in going through the over 2,500 issues of the Straight in preparation to write this book. It is published by Rocky Mountain Books. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Doug Sarti; Mr. Sarti, good morning.
