I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
Ken Dryden joins me now. He has just published Game Change: The Life and Death of Steve Montador, and the Future of Hockey. The book looks at Steve Montador’s career in the NHL and how the multiple concussions he sustained in his playing career resulted in his death at 35 and the subsequent diagnosis of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Mr. Dryden does extensive research interviewing former players, as well as leading figures in the fields of neurobiology and sports concussions. He also tells us the story of Mr. Montador, whose life though it end tragically could spur changes to the sport of hockey. Ken Dryden writes of what the NHL can do, and what fans, players and parents alike can do to make the sport safer. Ken Dryden was a goalie for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1970s, during which time the team won six Stanley Cups. He was a member of Team Canada 1972. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. He is a former member of Parliament, and a cabinet minister. He is the author of five previous books, including The Game, and Home Game, written with Roy MacGregor. This new book is published by Signal, which is an imprint of McClelland & Stewart.
