Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.

I follow André Picard on Twitter. The handle is @picardonhealth, by the way. I noticed in recent weeks as he’s been out travelling promoting his new book, he was picking up honorary degrees in at least three universities in Canada. It’s the measure of the esteem in which Mr. Picard is held. He is one of the most respected journalists in this country, who in his thirty years at the Globe and Mail has become one of the more reliable reporters on health. He has brought to his work, fairness, compassion and dignity. In his new book, Matters of Life and Death: Public Health Issues in Canada, Picard looks at healthcare in Canada, and looks at the critical issues that we have to look at urgently in this country. The book is a collection of his writing over the last fifteen years, and it charts how we’ve progressed but also at what’s in need of reform. We’ll touch on a number of the themes in this book. André Picard’s previous books The Gift of Death and Critical Care were bestsellers. He is an eight-time finalist for the National Newspaper Award, and he received the prestigious Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism. A number of health organisations and associations have honoured him for his work, such as the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health as a ‘Champion of Mental Health.’ He was named the first ‘Public Health Hero’ by the Canadian Public Health Association. He joins me from Montreal today. This book is published by Douglas & McIntyre. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, André Picard; Mr. Picard, good morning.
