The playwright and director Mary Vingoe discusses her play Refuge, which will be staged by the Firehall Arts Centre until 01 April 2017, refugees, Canada, theatre, and more, with Joseph Planta.

Starting this weekend at the Firehall Arts Centre is their latest production, Mary Vingoe’s play Refuge. Running until 01 April 2017, Refuge tells the story of what happens when a child soldier from Eritrea comes to Canada. The audience sees characters confronting their pasts and losses as they think about the responsibilities we have as we have in taking in those that seek a safer place. There are a lot of themes worth pondering, and who better to start with than the playwright herself, Mary Vingoe. I’ll get her to tell us about the genesis of the play, the questions she had as she wrote it, and how relevant this play is and what it might instruct us about the future. Mary Vingoe is a playwright and director, who was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for English-language drama for Refuge. She studied at Dalhousie University and the University of Toronto, where she founded Nightwood Theatre, and Ship’s Company Theatre, and Eastern Front Theatre. Her previous works include The Company Store, Holy Ghosters, Hooligans, and Herring Gull’s Egg. She was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010.
